Practice 03

Architecture that shows its own workings.

Strategy decks fail for a predictable reason: nobody can trace the recommendation back to the evidence, so the first hard budget conversation kills it. We build strategies and architectures the other way round — from the facts of your estate up — so every roadmap item can defend itself, and progress can be measured against the plan that promised it.

Service areas

From strategy to catalogue to blueprint to delivery.

Strategise

Technology & digital strategy

A technology strategy anchored to your business strategy: drivers, vision and principles; capability gaps and investments; a roadmap with sequencing logic; and a delivery plan with real numbers attached. Built with your leadership team, not presented to them.

  • Technology strategy & investment roadmap
  • Digital strategy & readiness assessment
  • Business capability models & capability-based planning
  • Modernisation strategy for legacy estates

Organise

Operating model assessment & design

How the technology and security functions are organised decides whether the strategy can be delivered at all. We assess the current operating model against the outcomes you need and design the target: structure, roles, decision rights, governance forums, sourcing mix and the transition to get there.

  • Current-state operating model assessment
  • Target operating model design for IT, architecture and security
  • Governance, decision rights & forum design
  • Sourcing model, roles & transition plan

Catalogue

Portfolio catalogues & assessment

You can't govern what you haven't inventoried. We build the catalogues that put the whole estate on one page — applications, technology and integrations — and assess each application against the 5 Rs (retain, rehost, replatform, refactor, retire) so every item has a decision and an owner.

  • Application portfolio catalogue & 4/5 Rs assessment
  • Technology portfolio catalogue & lifecycle status
  • Integration portfolio catalogue
  • Technical debt & risk quantification

Connect

Integration & API strategy

Integration is where estates quietly rot. We set an API-led strategy that turns point-to-point sprawl into reusable, governed, secured interfaces — and design the integration platform and patterns to support it.

  • API-led integration strategy & standards
  • Integration architecture & platform design
  • Integration hub and pattern library design
  • API security, lifecycle & governance

Migrate

Cloud strategy, migration & efficiency

Cloud adoption designed around workloads, not slogans: assess the estate, define the target architecture and landing zones, choose migration paths per application, and build security, identity and cost governance in from day one — across AWS, Azure and GCP.

  • Cloud migration strategy & readiness assessment
  • Landing zone & target cloud architecture
  • Cloud identity & access management
  • FinOps & cloud efficiency programmes

Data

Data architecture & governance

A data landscape you can navigate: target data architecture, principles and standards; governance that assigns real ownership; and the platform designs that let analytics and AI initiatives build on solid ground rather than sand.

  • Data architecture, modelling & data glossary
  • Data warehouse & data hub design
  • Data governance operating model & stewardship
  • Analytics, MI & data platform strategy

Transact

Mergers, acquisitions & divestments

Structural change compresses years of architecture decisions into months. We run rapid due diligence on the technology and security of a target, design integration or separation architectures, and plan the transition — including carve-outs where the clock starts on day one.

  • Technology & security due diligence
  • Integration & separation architecture
  • Data and platform migration between organisations
  • Carve-out & TSA exit planning

Build

EA capability & selection

If architecture matters to you long-term, you need the capability in-house. We assess and develop EA functions, establish standards, principles and governance, select tooling — and run technology procurements from RFI through negotiation, on your side of the table.

  • EA capability assessment & development
  • Baseline, target & transition architectures
  • Standards, principles & architecture governance
  • Product selection & procurement (RFI/RFP)

What the output looks like

Several hundred applications. One page. Every one with a decision.

A critical application review from a recent portfolio assessment, redrawn with the names removed. Each application is plotted by business value against operational and strategic risk; the diagonal bands turn position into a decision — retain, refresh or upgrade, replace, or retire — so the roadmap that follows is traceable to evidence, application by application.

How we build the capability

Six phases from mobilisation to a capability that sustains itself.

Our enterprise architecture capability development (EACD) service establishes a mature EA capability in six phases over five to eight months, built on Athencis' framework product: an operating model, an architecture framework spanning business, information, systems, technical and security architecture, and the sustainability measures that keep it alive after we leave. Clients typically reach CMMI level 3–4.

BEAM™ — Benefits-Led Enterprise Architecture Method

How each architecture iteration produces the full content framework.

Every iteration runs the same eight-step cycle — from scope and purpose through target and current-state architecture, gap analysis, opportunities and implementation planning, to governance and assessment — with strategy and performance as inputs and risks, issues and requirements at the centre. What it produces is the complete EA content framework: governance and mobilisation artefacts, four domains across four layers of abstraction, cybersecurity as a first-class domain, and the transformation roadmaps that turn architecture into a plan.

The Athencis difference

Security-literate architecture. Architecture-literate security.

Most firms sell these as separate practices staffed by separate people. We think that's exactly how organisations end up with elegant architectures that fail audits, and compliant estates that can't change. One practitioner across both disciplines means the trade-offs get made in one head — deliberately.

Consequence

Roadmaps that price in security

Every migration and modernisation option is costed with its security and compliance impact — not surprised by it in month nine.

Consequence

Controls that fit the architecture

Security controls designed against the real estate and its direction of travel, so they don't have to be rebuilt after every change.

Consequence

One version of the truth

The portfolio assessment, the risk assessment and the roadmap draw on the same evidence base — so they can't quietly contradict each other.

Consequence

Decisions that hold

When the board asks "why this option?", the answer traces to evidence — which is why the decision survives the next budget round.
